Your dermatologist understands the frustration you are facing with acne or acne scars. He/she will be in the best position to advise you on the most appropriate treatment options to deal with your condition. You can make the most of your appointment by preparing a list of questions prior to your visit.
Your first visit to the dermatologist should be a pleasant one. He/she will likely ask questions pertaining to your lifestyle, medications that you have taken, etc. Do not feel embarrassed as sharing the necessary information will allow your skin specialist to also provide you with a better assessment of your acne and acne scars.
Acne refers to clogged pores (whiteheads and blackheads) and pimples which may appear on the face, neck, shoulders, chest and back. It typically begins in the early teens and can affect up to 85% of people in this age group. However, acne can also affect adults -25% of men and 50% of women suffer from it at some point in their adults lives. If left untreated, it can lead to severe and permanent scars.
There are 3 common groups of acne sufferers. The first group consists of common teenage acne that
clears up after a few years. The second group concerns those who would experience severe and stubborn
inflamed acne, and warrant more aggressive treatment to eradicate the problem. The third group is the
adult-onset acne who experiences acne outbreak for the first time as an adult.
Acne eruptions do come and go, but unfortunately some are left with acne scars and marks that may be
permanent if left untreated. And it is impossible to predict which patient will scar. Therefore acne
problem is not a trivial matter and should be treated early and thoroughly.
